my friend just told me that there's a secret second dashboard that solely contains posts from people you've turned on post notifications for, and when i click the link in the messages it opens it within the tumblr app, so the tumblr app also has a secret second dashboard for post notification blogs, and the only way to access it is to open the link for it within the app.

i literally love tumblr

i have a private pinned post that just has a link to this dashboard on it, it's great. two dashboards for life

wow! i was really hoping someone would organically reverse-engineer this and find that dash.

here are a few other "secret" dashboards:

these are all just taking existing feeds of content and putting them in a dashboard-like format... the "Stuff for you" tab/feed is the same idea.

I recently discovered laundry stripping and y’all, no matter how much of a crock of shit you think fast fashion is, you’re underestimating.

OKAY SO. You know how we talk about how one way fast fashion has made itself “necessary” is that the clothing looks like shit and feels horrible after just a few washes?

Let. Me. Tell. You. Something.

Laundry stripping is a process where you load your laundry into a tub or bin (I’ve been using my bathtub) with warm water, half a cup of borax, half a cup of washing soda, and half a cup of laundry soap (not detergent, SOAP, there’s a chemical difference). Leave it there for at least eight hours. I’ve been going for 12-24.

What you will come back to is a tub full of nearly-opaque black-gray-brown water that absolutely REEKS. This is normal. You are looking at (and smelling) hard water buildup, body sweat and oils that were embedded in the fabric, dead skin, and just regular grime.

Wring out your clothes. Throw them in the washer. (I like to do a spin-only cycle before going any further, because I have one of those washers that determines by weight how much water any given load needs.) Wash as usual.

You will notice I didn’t suggest any further pretreatment, and that’s because 1) you don’t want to layer too many chemicals on top of each other but also 2) you may not even need it.

When your clothes come out, check each one as it goes into the dryer, and if anything else s still stained, set it aside to run again with a regular pretreatment. One of the sweaters I did this with apparently did need a second treatment…to deal with what appears to have possibly been a hot chocolate stain that was previously invisible due to “well, it’s old” dinginess. I was planning to throw this sweater out. It looks almost new now. I need to wash it one more time for the probably-a-hot-chocolate stain, and then it needs to have the hem weighted to block it and bring it back to evenness, but dude. I wear my clothes to rags and I thought this thing was unfixable. “I need to reshape it” is nothing.

Remove clothes from dryer when done. Fucking MARVEL at the colors and how good the fabric feels. Give them a smell. Get righteously and royally angry that you can rejuvenate this stuff so easily, with a process that does take awhile but is 90% hands-off, but we’ve been trained to believe it’s all got to be binned once a year because discoloration and gross fabric is “normal wear and tear” and can’t be fixed.

It’s utterly unreal! I just pulled a seven-year-old work undershirt out of the dryer and this thing looks NEW!! It FEELS almost new!!! One of the shirts I hung up from the last load is older than some of the people on this site and it went from “I keep this to wear on laundry day, for sentimental reasons” to “I could actually wear this out of the house, it looks old but respectable”! The pajama bottoms I’m wearing were from Goodwill and they have BRIGHT YELLOW in them! I thought it was goldenrod!!

I do not know how often you’re supposed to do this (doing it every time can strip the dye out of your clothes, not to mention it’s way too much work to do every time), but once or twice per season seems respectable. I don’t wear white, so I can’t test the “it will make whites look almost-new as well” claim, but I’ve seen a lot of people on the cleaning subreddit attest that it works.

Just remember: WASHING soda. Not baking soda. I tried baking soda and a little bit happened, but not a lot.

Go forth. Rejuvenate your clothing. Strip your laundry.

1. Download Firefox

2. Add the following extensions: uBlock Origin, AdBlocker Ultimate, Privacy Badger, Privacy Possum, minerBlock (ClearURLs and Don’t track me Google also recommended but not necessary for this)

3. Go forth brave soldier

netscapenavigator-official

I actually wanna chime in here and give my two cents since I’ve done a lot of anxious research for similar fears of mine. So here goes. Summary/TLDR at the bottom:

The more browser extensions you have installed, the more fingerprintable your web browser is!

That’s why on the TOR Foundation’s website they recommend that you install ZERO extensions on the Tor Browser. Of course, in reality most people want or need some, so here’s what I’ve come to learn on a few vital and mentioned ones. The goal is to minimize your extensions as much as possible.

You don’t need two ad blockers. uBlock Origin is the best of the best, and has an element zapper if it ever misses anything automatically, which it rarely, if ever, does.

Privacy Badger is (allegedly) an outdated extension that doesn’t do very much other than make your browser more fingerprintable.

minerBlocker (while I haven’t don’t much research) doesn’t sound very useful. Because Firefox, if you change the Cookie Block settings, can block CrytoMiners on its own. uBlock Origin can also do this with a special script, but that’s beyond me, so you’ll have to turn to Reddit if you wanna use it for CryptoMiner blocking.

If you’re worried about viruses, the app Malwarebytes is cross-platform and open-source. It’s widely trusted by r/privacy and r/piracy. The free tier won’t run automatically after your free trial is up, so just run it every time you install a piece of pirated software, and then every once in a while after.

Also, you forgot the golden rule of torrenting. A good browser and extensions only prevent fingerprinting from a website, itself. This isn’t what’s gonna get you in trouble with the law. So: GET A VPN!! The ONLY way to prevent your internet service provider (ISP) from seeing what you’re doing is to encrypt your network usage with a VPN. Mozilla (the makers of Firefox) have a paid VPN which I personally use and is very beginner friendly and cross-platform. Most free VPNs cannot be trusted and usually collect, sell, and report illegal data, which defeats the purpose. Without a VPN, however, your ISP will be able to see that you’re downloading peer-to-peer content. Now, that isn’t always a bad thing. Some ISPs don’t care, and won’t do shit. For example, Mozilla VPN has failed a few times for me when I left my client running overnight, and nothing’s ever happened. If you live in Germany or another country with stricter piracy laws, or you have a stricter American ISP, you could get fined and/or have your service turned off. In Germany people have even gotten jail time. The #1 thing to do if you have anxiety about piracy is get a well-trusted VPN like Mozilla’s. In fact, if you only do one thing from this thread, THIS is the one to do. I highly recommend that you NEVER download to upload peer-to-peer pirated content without one, as it is a serious risk.

And finally, use r/piracy as a means to find reliable websites. Do not download torrents or files off random websites before looking it up on r/piracy. Stick to popular and active torrents, and I would suggest primarily using 1337x.to as a trusty website. Also, look for trusted crackers and repackers. For example, if you’re torrenting Mac Apps, a well known cracking group is TNT. If you want games and Windows software, FitGirl and DODI are popular repackers for them. DODI’s repacks are also among the only ones I’ve found that word with Translation Layers like Wine, WineSkin, and CrossOver on macOS and Linux.

Also, no amount of extensions on Firefox will make you anonymous. If want anonymity, you need to download the Tor Browser, add ZERO extensions, and NEVER change the default window size or settings. This level of security usually isn’t necessary for your average torrent downloader, though. I’d much rather use Firefox + a VPN than Tor. Tor is extremely slow because of it’s Onion Anonymizing Network, and is really only needed for people who have a reason to hide from the government, ie: political whistleblowers, protest organizers, etc.

There is also an extension called NoScript. It’s the only extension that comes with Tor, and it can be downloaded on Firefox as well. This extension is your gateway to preventing websites from collecting and sharing your data. HOWEVER, this extension will break websites, and it can be very frustrating to use if you aren’t privacy-minded, tech savvy, and patient. So, if you’re a beginner, I’d recommend trying this one at another time.

And finally, you need a way to download the torrented data (duh). The only two clients (apps) most people trust are qBittorent and Transmission. uTorrent is no longer trusted due to privacy issues. DO NOT USE IT. If you’re a beginner and want something with a pleasant UI, I highly recommend Transmission. I’ve been using it, and personally I love the simplicity over qBittorent; however, I know a lot of more advanced users really love qBittorent.

So, if you wanna get into the basics of piracy, here’s what you need:

  1. Firefox
  2. uBlock Origin
  3. ClearURLs
  4. “Strict” or “Custom” Cookie Setting on Firefox
  5. Mozilla VPN!!!
  6. Transmission

If you wanna go more in depth, add NoScript and swap Transmission for qBittorent.

And if you wanna go really advanced, replace Firefox with Tor Browser and download ZERO extensions. If you need me to tell you how to use Tor and what it’s for, though, then you probably don’t need it.

plushieanimals

Anonymous asked:

hello!! i checked your faq and couldn't find this question, but you seem like the person who could answer it. when you acquire pre-loved or vintage plushies, how do you disinfect/wash them? especially beanie babies? like beyond spot cleaning

plushieanimals answered:

This turned into my masterpost of how to clean plushies! I also have a tag for plush care where i’ve answered asks about damaged fur, and brush recommendations + more!

How to wash and clean stuffed animals:

🧸 1. Prep! 🧸

I vacuum/lint roll the plush to get any stray hairs/dust/debris etc. I have a soft bristle brush attachment for my vacuum that i bought off amazon that i use exclusively for stuffed animals

I always hand wash my plushies when possible, but i’ve included a section on both spot cleaning for less dirty plush and machine washing under the wash section!

NOTE: if your plushie has a voice box or joints or anything inside that is incompatible with water then don’t submerge it!!

🧼 2. Soap! 🧼

I use Woolite brand soap because it’s gentle and safe for synthetics. I dilute the detergent with water in about a 1:4 soap:water ratio in a small container (i usually use the detergent cap)

i use woolite but any gentle detergent safe for synthetics will work. Stuffed animal fur and stuffing is generally made of plastic! NO FABRIC SOFTENER! it can leave a residue.

image
image

🫧 3. Wash! 🫧

Hand washing: I soak the plush under COLD running water first, and then with my hands i apply and lather the soap in to the fur/fabric and make sure i thouroughly saturate it with the soapy water.

For plush that can’t be bathed/aren’t super dirty/only need a spot clean I use a damp microfiber rag dipped in a mixture of lukewarm water + a tiny (like a drop!) of soap (woolite or dawn) and rub them down all over with it. Then I go over them with a rag damp with clean, soapless water until all the soap is gone. If your plush has medium or long fur you still will want to brush it out to make sure the fur dries soft and not clumped up! Check my section on drying/detailing below.

For machine washing put them in a pillow case to protect the eyes, and put some pillows/ blankets/ towels in the machine with the plush to pad it. use gentle detergent and wash it on “delicates” (or your machines gentlest cycle) with COLD water! Top loading machines do best for this and you’ll want to arrange them sitting up with their backs to the wall of the machine if possible. For front loading machines just throw a bunch of extra pillows/blankets to pad it. skip to step 5 if you end up using a washing machine. NEVER PUT PLUSH IN THE DRYER!!!

🚿 4. Rinse! 🚿

Use cold running water! Make sure no soap remains. I smell the plushies periodically to be extra certain i’ve gotten the soap out. You can gently squeeze the plushie depending on the stuffing type. Some plush may need to be washed twice depending on the filth-level.

Beanie babies and some other plush can be squeezed because of their beans, but plush made out of purely soft stuffing can have their stuffing deformed if you squeeze them too much. Some brands like douglas have stiffer plush with beans and stuffing and they actually can be squeezed too. (DO NOT “WRING OUT” ANY PLUSH!!)

🧽 5. Pre-dry! 🧽

after the soap is 100% out and you are happy with the cleanliness of the plushie, you have two options to pre-dry them:

  • My favorite way is to put the plush in my washing machine and run it on “spin” cycle only, which is very effective at getting excess water out. In my experience the plush barely moves in my top loading machine, but you can always put the plush in a clean pillow case or put a bunch of clean towels in with it to pad/stabilize the plush in a side loader or if the plush is fragile
  • If you can’t use your washing machine for any reason, then try your best to get as much water out without damaging the plush. Consider wrapping it in a towel and making a sling with a second towel and spinning it around you, lol. It will be okay if you can’t do any of these things, though! PLEASE don’t “WRING OUT” your plushies as this can deform them!

I NEVER put my plush in the dryer, it can melt the fur fibers and cause matting/damage!! Some people use the “air dry/no heat” but i don’t like to take risks

🧺 6. Dry! 🧺

⭐️ This is the most important part, you must set your plush up to air dry thouroughly!! I prefer to use a fan pointed at the plush. but if you don’t have access to any kind of fan then a hair dryer set on cool could work, and plain air drying works too, it just takes longer.

I brush the fur out with a soft bristle brush once or twice while it’s drying to make sure the fur dries fluffy and soft. I use a build a pear paw brush. You can also use a plastic slicker brush and brush backwards with the direction of the fur to avoid pulling the fur fibers out. Don’t use a brush/comb that’s been used on humans or pets without super disinfecting it first, as the skin oils/dirt can damage your plushies fur!

For beanie babies or any plush with beans you must make sure the beans dry completely, they take way longer than the stuffing!

  • You need to rotate the plush every few hours or so to make sure it’s drying throughly. Try not to dry it in a humid room! There is a risk of mold if a plush doesn’t dry completely before being packed up/sealed up.

✨ 7. Detail! ✨

(optional) after the plush is completely dry i go back with the brushes and detangle/fluff up the plush! This is almost necessary for any long/medium furred plush to keep the fur soft and detangled. I use the soft bristle brush for all, and plastic slicker brush for long fur. You can get a small plastic slicker brush for kittens/small dogs at walmart for like $3. Just make sure to be gentle with any combs/slicker brushes to avoid damaging the plush/ripping out the fur. ^_^

This was super long! I have hand washed like 25 plushies of all different sizes at this point and this is what works for me. I have a lot of thrifted plush and they dont always come in great shape. you can reply to this post or send me a message if you have any questions!

Low level/continuous pain tips for writing

Want to avoid the action movie effect and make your character's injuries have realistic lasting impacts? Have a sick character you're using as hurt/comfort fodder? Everyone has tips for how to write Dramatic Intense Agony, but the smaller human details of lasting or low-level discomfort are rarely written in. Here are a few pain mannerisms I like to use as reference:

General

  • Continuously gritted teeth (may cause headaches or additional jaw pain over time)
  • Irritability, increased sensitivity to lights, sounds, etc
  • Repetitive movements (fidgeting, unable to sit still, slight rocking or other habitual movement to self-soothe)
  • Soft groaning or whimpering, when pain increases or when others aren't around
  • Heavier breathing, panting, may be deeper or shallower than normal
  • Moving less quickly, resistant to unnecessary movement
  • Itching in the case of healing wounds
  • Subconsciously hunching around the pain (eg. slumped shoulders or bad posture for gut pain)
  • Using a hand to steady themself when walking past walls, counters, etc (also applies to illness)
  • Narration-wise: may not notice the pain was there until it's gone because they got so used to it, or may not realize how bad it was until it gets better
  • May stop mentioning it outright to other people unless they specifically ask or the pain increases

Limb pain

  • Subtly leaning on surfaces whenever possible to take weight off foot/leg pain
  • Rubbing sore spots while thinking or resting
  • Wincing and switching to using other limb frequently (new/forgettable pain) or developed habit of using non dominant limb for tasks (constant/long term pain)
  • Propping leg up when sitting to reduce inflammation
  • Holding arm closer to body/moving it less
  • Moving differently to avoid bending joints (eg. bending at the waist instead of the knees to pick something up)

Nausea/fever/non-pain discomfort

  • Many of the same things as above (groaning, leaning, differences in movement)
  • May avoid sudden movements or turning head for nausea
  • Urge to press up against cold surfaces for fever
  • Glazed eyes, fixed stare, may take longer to process words or get their attention
  • Shivering, shaking, loss of fine motor control

If you have any more details that you personally use to bring characters to life in these situations, I'd love to hear them! I'm always looking for ways to make my guys suffer more write people with more realism :)

jackironsides

This is less ‘tricks I've used’ and more ‘my personal experience’, but I have used some of these in whump writing (I have a TMA fic that's all about adjusting to new pain!)

  • FATIGUE. This is the big one that people get wrong. Ongoing pain is exhausting. Your character might not be able to do as much as they usually do, even if they're being careful to avoid aggravating their wound or injury. It's especially true if they've spent a month in the hospital and are deconditioned, but just pain itself is exhausting for the body.
  • Brain fog and difficulty concentrating. Especially if the pain is peaking, or they're getting tired towards the end of the day. Speech gets harder to process, books are harder or impossible to read. Memory is worse. You can have aphasia where you lose a word or two. Brain fog will often/usually arrive with irritability. Not being able to think clearly – or remember the word for ... thing. The machine you use to wash dishes – is incredibly frustrating.
  • Lack of sleep makes pain worse. If your character is healing fairly well and is getting to the stage where their pain is tolerable, being forced to stay up all night for plot reasons will make their pain much worse the next day. Like 'pain levels have gone from a 4 to an 8' kind of worse.
  • Nausea from pain. Less applicable to low-level pain, but you can get nausea from severe pain. It isn't 'oh no I think I'm going to be sick' nausea (IME), it's just a complete disinterest in food. You might have your injured person picking at their food, or eating smaller meals than usual. You can definitely get this from moderate chronic or ongoing pain, too – it isn't just a horrifically severe injury thing.
  • Pain in areas other than the injury site. This is a combo here of 'kid of a physio' and an 'easily injured person's first-hand experience'. There are several ways that you get pain elsewhere:
  1. Referred pain. This is where you hurt yourself in one spot but feel the pain elsewhere. This is especially applicable to soft-tissue injuries.
  2. Compensation. If my left knee goes out and I change my gait pattern by limping, I'll likely develop pain in my right leg, as now it's handling more weight than usual. I have crap joints, so that could easily be my right knee or right hip. If your character has an old injury on the 'good' side, that could flare up through compensation. Other things to think of here is the pain that can be caused by aids such as crutches and canes – full weight bearing on crutches left my palms in agony, and my wrists too. Shoulders are also not used to supporting large amounts of weight. I had a crutch go out from under me on an icy surface, and for a good week or so, the sprain was more painful than my healing broken leg.
  3. Protection. (idk if this has a better name) I injured one of my neck muscles (wry neck), and got pain through the whole shoulder and neck on that side as other muscles tensed up to protect the injury, and to prevent further damage. This caused more pain, and took nearly a month to settle down with treatment.
  • Pain often gets worse through the day. This ties in with 'lack of sleep makes pain worse'. When it comes to soft-tissue injuries (muscles etc), inflammatory pain (like arthritis) hurts most in the mornings, but postural problems (like my wry neck) get worse as the day goes on.
nydescynt

  • WEATHER - When it is approaching a storm or just cold out pain can flare up unexpectedly, especially joint pain. Sometimes this manifests as stiffness; I can tell when a storm is coming because my ankle will start locking up.
  • Pain + Problems aren't always linked! Esp for older injuries. Sometimes I'll be in a lot of pain + have no mobility issues. Sometimes no pain, but my leg will painlessly give way at random when I take a step. (When hiking I use a walking stick on my 'bad' side- I need a failsafe if my ankle gives out unexpectedly.)
  • Also can say from experience that nausea from high-level pain can 100% be 'oh no I'm going to be sick'

While I'm talking about writing I do want to rec two INCREDIBLE writing apps that have helped me immensely as a writer with ADHD

Stimuwrite is a little program that you can customize with all sorts of really rewarding instant tactile feedback, for example sound effects every time you hit a key, emoji notifications and balloons when you hit your custom goal (which can be as low as you want for low energy days), and neat animated backgrounds.

4thewords turns writing into an RPG and you can kill monsters via word count in order to complete quests and progress through what I personally find to be an interesting and fun storyline. It comes with all the RPG trappings like loot, gear, even custom housing (win more stuff for your house by writing).

I cannot stress ENOUGH how amazing both of these have been in terms of my writing productivity as someone with pretty severe executive dysfunction issues. Usually I use Stimuwrite for the instant feedback and then copy and paste those over into 4thewords for the gamification.

Both are small indie projects, Stimuwrite is pay-what-you-can-afford and 4thewords is $4/month but they are very good about helping people who genuinely can't afford it.

and AS THE CHERRY ON TOP, Stimuwrite's programmer is a trans woman, and while I'm not sure about the 4thewords team in specific, the game is FILLED with really great rep, they are literally having a lesbian wedding global event going on right now as I type this. So like. I like giving money to them more than giving money to a lot of other projects lol.

Anyway no neither of these projects have told me to write about them or anything I just want to spread the love. Go check them out!!
